We have now disposed of the building in Middlesbrough, in which we were originally housed, for various reasons, such as:
- Constant demands on finances for refurbishment work
- Insufficient parking
- Unwillingness of members to travel to Middlesbrough centre
- Insufficient capital to help the needs of engineering on Teesside
to name a few.
The CSI can now revert to the role for which it was founded - providing a hub for individuals and groups to further science and engineering in the Tees Valley. Some of our objectives are as follows:
- To work with existing organisations which are promoting the engineering profession in the area, encouraging supplementary engineering education within existing schools, colleges and the University of Teesside, and providing services to Member organisations.
- Broaden the currently defined membership to reflect the changes in engineering since the original formation of the CSI. This will aim to incorporate the Petrochemical, Power, Water, Transport and Services industries, together with others supported by the CSI Council.
- The existing House and Finance sub-Committee will be disbanded and replaced by and Executive Committee, responsible to the council, to oversee financial management of resources and prepare a list of activities for consideration by the Council.
- Develop a new council structure to facilitate the above aims.
- Develop a CSI website to complement those of Members and conduct bookings etc., via our new e-mail address.
- Members of the CSI will be asked to join in the above enterprise by paying a fee, yet to be decided, but reflecting the services provided to them. This fee will qualify each Member to bring forward activities they wish to promote for support from the Council.
This fee income will be added to interest from investment of CSI capital and current reserves. The resulting income will fund services to Members and deserving engineering activities nominated and supported by the Members. These services are open to discussion but could include:
- Management of the process of finding suitable premises, with appropriate facilities such as catering and car parking, for regular Members meetings and events.
- Support for engineering related activities by local educational establishments. Hopefully imaginative engineering and science related activities for young people and provision of site visits and work experience in local firms.
- Support for similar activities by engineering companies in the Tees Valley.
- Support for other science and engineering related activities within the area.
